Wonderful Donkey Bay Inn

IF THERE IS ONE THING THAT LISA AND I LOVE TO DO IS TO EXPLORE OUR OWN BACKYARD (NZ) AND AS A TREAT, WE DECIDED TO ESCAPE TO RUSSELL TO THE DONKEY BAY INN.

The Donkey Bay Inn is located a short walk from the centre of the historic township of Russell, it was designed by maritime architect, Gary Underwood. The building is ecologically responsible and sits in total harmony with its environment. Its soaring eight-metre ceilings supports a living rooftop camouflaging Donkey Bay Inn into its hilltop position overlooking Waitata and Oneroa Bay. The Inn boasts 3 unique rooms The Emperors' Room, Skyfall and Tosca’s Room. A fourth room is in renovation, its name 007.

Year round the estate is supported by Wooffers (Willing Workers On Organic Farms). The estate produces all its own electricity, drinking water, fruit, veggies, olives, honey, cosmetics and occasionally the donkeys will deliver their wine to a local store to be sold.

I could go on and on about the amazing facts and figures about the property, but honestly that all wouldn’t matter if it wasn’t for the amazing staff at Donkey Bay Inn.

Before arriving, Matthew (the hotel manager) had a table booked for us at a local favourite, and after serving breakfast the next morning we planned together a day of relaxation around the property and local market. Before departing, we were guided around the Waitata estate by Amelia, who looks after the hotel guests and also lives on the property. We got to meet a few of the other locals that work on the estate including the wine baring donkeys.

These are just a few of the wonders and surprises to discover when visiting Donkey Bay Inn. We will be back.

If Donkey Bay Inn sounds like you, then make sure you get in touch we can book you in for the best nights sleep you will have in a long time!
