Itineraries

Day 1

Nhulunbuy (Gove)

Arrive by flight from Cairns to Nhulunbuy. Meet your Tour Director, then explore the frontier village, including the Roy (Malpi) Marika Lookout, Gayngaru Wetlands, and Gove Harbour. Overnight at Walkabout Lodge (2 nights).

Day 2

Gove Peninsula

Experience a ‘Welcome to Country’ ceremony at Wirrwawuy Beach. Visit the Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Centre to see Aboriginal art, especially bark paintings. After, go to Shady Beach for lunch and a Bush Medicine & Women’s Healing demonstration. Return to Nhulunbuy for the night.

Day 3

Murwangi

Travel south-west from Nhulunbuy on the Central Arnhem Road, heading to the Goyder River. Picnic lunch, then head to Murwangi safari camp. Settle into your deluxe safari suite for a 2-night stay.

Day 4

Arafura Swamp & Murwangi Discovery

Take a cruise of the Arafura Swamp and a 4WD adventure around its edge, guided by Indigenous hosts. Return to camp in the afternoon and enjoy some free time before dinner.

Day 5

Ramingining to Barramundi Lodge

Travel to Ramingining and visit the Bula’bula Art Centre, then cross rivers to reach Barramundi Lodge. Get settled and unwind, soaking up floodplain views.

Day 6

Fishing Adventure & Cultural Tour

Go on a fishing trip on the Liverpool and Tomkinson Rivers. In the afternoon, visit Maningrida Arts & Cultural Centre and the Djomi Museum. End the day with sunset drinks and dinner.

Day 7

Maningrida to Mount Borradaile

Drive through Arnhem Land’s “stone country,” crossing rivers to reach Mount Borradaile. In the afternoon, explore rock-art galleries featuring thousands of years of Aboriginal paintings. Overnight at the eco-lodge.

Day 8

Mount Borradaile

Tour the sandstone catacombs and rock shelters to learn about ancient art techniques. After lunch, explore Cooper Creek wetlands for birdlife and crocodiles. Finish with sunset nibbles and wine before returning to the lodge.

Day 9

Cobourg Peninsula to Seven Spirit Bay

Travel north via 4WD into Garig Gunak Barlu National Park to reach Seven Spirit Bay Wilderness Lodge. Settle into your “habitat” amongst the forest, then have dinner together in the lodge’s restaurant.

Day 10

Port Essington & Victoria Settlement

Cruise to historic Port Essington and explore the ruins of Victoria Settlement. Learn about its colonial past, enjoy a picnic lunch, and cruise back with wildlife spotting (dolphins, crocodiles, etc.). Relax at the lodge in the evening.

Day 11

Fishing & 4WD Adventure

Head out on a half-day fishing trip in Port Essington. Afterward, do a 4WD safari through Garig Gunak Barlu National Park: visit Nypa Palm galleries, Trepang Creek, and Gunners Quoin lookout. Return for your last night at Seven Spirit Bay.

Day 12

Farewell to Seven Spirit Bay

Fly by Cessna Grand Caravan across Van Diemen Gulf to Darwin. Check in at the Hilton Garden Inn Darwin, then enjoy a sunset dinner cruise on Charles Darwin with drinks and light refreshments.

Day 13

Board The Ghan Expedition

Transfer to Darwin Rail Terminal and board The Ghan. Enjoy lunch and your choice of Off-Train Experience in Katherine (Nitmiluk Gorge cruise, Outback Experience, or Cutta Cutta Caves). Overnight on The Ghan.

Day 14

The Ghan, Alice Springs

Arrive in Alice Springs and choose an Off-Train Experience: e-bike tour, cultural experiences, wildlife visits, or scenic flights. In the evening, enjoy dinner under the stars at the Telegraph Station.

Day 15

The Ghan, Coober Pedy

Travel through to Coober Pedy. Tour the underground town, learn about opal mining, or fly over Painted Hills and Lake Eyre. Dinner on the train.

Day 16

The Ghan, Adelaide

Cross into South Australia, passing the Flinders Ranges. Enjoy a leisurely brunch on board and arrive in Adelaide, completing your journey.
